Circa 1995: It was the first day of summer school and I was already getting into a fight with a kid named Gabriel, simply because we perceived each other to be the dominant cool muhf**kas in the room. In any case, the teacher mosied in gracefully before the verbal jousting fully escalated to mutual mollywhopping, and after that, somehow, we became friends.

I remember it like it was one XXL issue ago (or several rather…you know, when if you were a non-Interscope artist you actually had a chance at landing the cover): I had on some loud ass Girbaud shorts, a Tommy Hil shortsleeve I used to rock with the Tommy logo tag still on it to let people know it was Tommy, and Gabe was to my left asking me if I had heard the new Raekwon album. I hadn’t. In fact, any Wu records I had heard up until that point were the ones that happened to come on the radio, and I by no means had the funds to frequent The Wiz (I’m dating myself here- this is pre Walmart/Bestbuy era) or my local bootlegger. I wasn’t up on Wu, and I wasn’t up on Rae, but I fronted like I was.

Several weeks later, my school had a field trip to Jones Beach and I found out that this same friend of mine that put me up on the witty unpredictable live shit, had also beat me to asking out the dopest girl in class. I was salty, no doubt. But “Glaciers of Ice” started blaring over the speakers, almost as if on cue, and I was instantly consoled in only the way razor sharp grooves and damn near incoherent Wu-Tang slang can do.

Cheers to the purple tape, the first record I actually bought with my very own money, that I got from my parents.
