Is fire hot or cold?

When Kingdom Comes…Early

The ipod, torrent, and internet culture on a whole has spoiled us as music consumers to a point never seen before. Gone are the days when we were faaaar too young to be purchasing anything with a parental advisory sticker, but would still wait impatiently for that Tuesday when that artist dropped that new hot shit. I was among the hordes of kids who even broke curfew to kick it at Virgin records on a Monday night, all so that I can get that new record first once the clock struck 12.

What ever happened to anticipating a record, and deeply appreciating that very anticipation? There’s something incomparable to waiting weeks or even months for a new album, spending 15 hard earned (or begged, or borrowed, or stolen) dollars on that album, and letting that shit spin in your CD player while you soak in raw production and lyrics chronicling the artists journey from the last album, and in some cases, birth.

Cambridge of Palms Out Sounds is probably pissed off at me right about now, because I called him at 4 in the morning simply to ask him if he thought it would be ethical of us, as a music blog, to post joints from the new Jay-Z album immediately. After ceremoniously uttering some not so affectionate words, he basically concurred with my current sentiment- that being, these leaks are fucking up my experience as a fan. Straight up. As a direct result of my ipod and an insatiable thirst for new music, I’ve developed a sort of musical a.d.d. that has me feeling relatively indifferent about every record I come across on the internet, and not really able to remember with confidence the lyrics on the lp, as well as how good or disappointing a particular album is. Conversely, I can recall lyrics verbatim and describe in intricate pixellated detail my thoughts regarding any record that I officially reconciled my anticipation for via a record store purchase.

I’m not sure how I’m going to balance the obligation I feel to our readers to provide dope music first, with maintaining my desire to preserve the all important virtue of patience as integral to the fan experience. I can’t even promise that in the very near future I won’t be guilty of what I’m presently condemning. But if I can help it, I’ll wait until the release date, journey on down to Burkina or Rock ‘N’ Soul in NYC, and cop an official shrinkwrapped copy to insert and play in a very awkwardly sized discman.

PS. Vote for Palms Out as Best Hip-Hop Blog

I really don’t know what you would post…
The album is probably jayz’s WORST ever.
Just because its new, and just because its JAY Z, does not make the album good.

    he needs to start writing.

true…my post was meant to be general (i.e. I felt the same way about lupe’s album, and outkast’s album and just about every release I look forward to), simply using jay’s record as the most current example. thanks for the info though, I keep hearing kingdom come is ehhhhh, but my point is, i’ll be stronger in my stance regarding my thoughts on the record (one way or the other) after i’ve waited for the release date and dropped those 15 bones

so thaaats who was calling me in the middle of the night! i thought it was a crazy girl(unnamed) on the hunt- but i would have told you to do exactly what you did. unfortunately i would guess that the frustration youre experiencing is not just about filesharing and leaking, but also about getting older, and being (over)exposed to an abundance of music. that’s how it is for me at least…

Now you just anticipate the leak and not the actual release date.

And, anyway, it’s hard to get really excited about albums that end up being so disappointing as albums. How many times have you been let down this year? Is there a hip hop record that came out this year you liked from start to finish? Or one where you liked 75% of the tracks? Kingdom Come is no different. It sounds like hip hop for Starbucks.

I give you props man. I remember the anticipation and the long first few nights with a new album listening to each track attentively, learning the words of at least 5 top songs within a few days. It is something that I believe has passed us with todays digital age. I mean c’mon who can really memorize/remember phone numbers these days, when they can just tap it in the celly!? Shit has taken over, we just have to learn to live with it and accept it. But look at the advantages, now we can have limitless access to music and are able to hold thousands and thousands of songs and albums all neatly organized and available to the tips of our fingers just about wherever you are (if you have an ipod or whatever). I think its a toss up and its something we just have to accept and learn to live with and view it from a positive angle. Those past days are gone and we must be thankful we were able to experience it.

I don’t even think it’s the full album leaks that are the worst–it’s the constant dribble of leaked tracks that’s the most deflating in terms of anticipation.

Blue Carpet Treatment, for instance, doesn’t even come out for another week but like 20% of the album has been floating around for months (of course now the whole record is leaked, natch). And I’m already sick of them! How much anticipation could I possibly muster for it now?

There is always the live experience. But when you’re talking cats as big as Jay-Z… its not that great of an experience if you ask me.

i love Jay-Z but I am disappointed in what I’ve heard so far. This year has been full of disappointments… The Roots/ Game Theory was okay… Lupe don’t even get me started …… I am a die hard fan of the roots crew and Hov so I will buy them anyway…. I am patiently waiting the Leak of Nas new cd.

I don’t know about you all but I’m having a hard time beleiving that leaking of tracks is hurting anything.

Personally I beleive that any publicity is good publicity and Lupe Fiasco is a perfect example of this. He is a mediocre rhymesayer but because of the buzz created over his album leaks 1,2, and 3 no one seems to be able to keep his name out their mouth. I must’ve read five articles about his leak without even knowing who he was. Being a DJ I’m promoting for dudes months before a single is out. As for Jovah, what makes you think the CEO can’t keep tracks under wraps?

I think the real issue here is that hip-hop is gettin on in years and so are it’s die hard fans. We are highly versed in the genre, we’ve studied our Rakim and Ultramags, we all were sideswiped by groups like The Pharcyde and The Roots. I think we’ve become saturated and over critical but at the same time a lot of the albums coming out just feel tired. Read what Nas said in his last Rolling Stone interview.

NAS: “It’s over, so fuck it exploit it and piss on it.”

After reading that I kinda couldn’t help but agree with him, even though he’s been over since giving me my favorite album back in the 90′s. It’s a sad time for the empire. After whatching the BET video awards I was embarassed by the state of hip-hop.

So back to the point… the leaks aren’t the problem if anything they are buzz snatching publicity grabs for otherwise tired albums of a dead genre. I mourn the passing but like so many other things in life the money ruined, I feel like I’m better off for the experience. The Bridge is over.

I started getting into hip-hop when I was like 12, about 6 years ago around the end of napster. And yet ever since when it comes to records I am anticapting, I still go crazy over marketing, singles and leaked tracks and eventually the album. But being a youngin, I can’t always afford an album that I wanna hear. So fuck it, of the two albums I’ve acquired illegally this week (both I was frothing at the mouth for), I’m still going to cop the Clipse and forget Jay-Z. Only other american hiphop LP’s that made me feel that way this year are fishscale, king, donuts and the e-40 and i’ve heard way more.
To me, leaking (if not too far before the release) is all part of the anticapation, but that could just be how I don’t remember a time before it all happening. It’s just quality control for me, and until US hip-hop steps its game up, I may just get the leaked lp and delete half the tracks to make a dope ep, maybe cop the 12″ to pay for it.
