Wonder Years

“It[class division through capital] has drowned the most heavenly ecstasies of religious fervor, of chivalrous enthusasim, of philistine sentimentalism. It has resolved personal worth into a exchange value”
Marx/Engels

One can make mature decisions with their hat turned back just as easy as one can make immature decisions wearing a three piece suit. There is a fine line between assimilating out of necessity and making it necessary to reject hip-hop to assimilate. On “30 Something” Jay-Z speaks to the process of his maturation. Jay rattles off a laundry list of comparisons between him and younger heads: “I used to let my pants just sag not given a fuck…I used to wear my hood like that….Now I got black card… I’m all grown up” Jay-Z speaks nearly exclusively to surface changes to explain his transfer into a more high end social and capital class and in doing so he equates his status with maturity. Although I see the reasoning for such parallels it seems a narrow idea of what grown up means and offers a limited set of standards to determine one’s maturity.

I use this song as a example that suggests that abandoning certain elements of Hip-Hop leads to a transformation into a successful and responsible adult. Equating the process of growing up with specific alterations in appearance and finance undermines the intangible metamorphosis of maturation and reduces Hip-Hop to a surface image.

Becoming a responsible father or business person relies more upon remaining true to one’s identity than to conforming to an outsider’s idealized one. It would be naive to ignore the real repercussions of deeply engrained standards of social behavior and appearance and to believe that they will be altered for the sake of the increasingly adult Hip-Hop generation. However, it would be unfortunate to allow standardization to become a measuring stick of self-identity. Dealing with societal response to Hip-Hop is one thing, internalizing a legitimacy of such a response is quite another. A concern exists toward the position Hip-Hop is placed in when standardization means the necessary rejecting of Hip-Hop. As Hip-Hop and its patrons, and its culture and identity moves from youth into true adulthood, it seems unjust that the opposite of Hip-Hop is growing up.

I realize that one may hear “30 Something” as simply suggesting that as one grows up, one emphasizes certain things less than others. However, that does not seem to be the entire message of the song, or the status quo. There is an undertone that emphasizes rejecting a nontraditional image to assume an acceptable one (look at the intentions and arguments against the NBA dress code). The implication is that the process of moving from trouble making youth to law abiding adult hinges on a rejection of something seemingly irrelevant. It means that one will not be allowed to evolve socially without making certain superficial changes.

I do not mean to say one should wear a hoody to the board meeting or use slang with your banker; I simply mean, do not allow standards of success, empowerment, and most importantly, maturity, to be placed in a position polar to Hip-Hop.

I don’t believe “30 Something” to necessarily be the rejection of traditionally unaccepted hip hop fashion in favor of three-piece suits and rolex watches, but instead, merely a response to those who say Jay is too old for the game. Jay’s maturation is less the rejection that you write about but instead proof that the game can have many faces. What he prooves is that you can still look like a G wearing a suit and tie (http://artfiles.art.com/images/-/Jay-Z-Photograph-C12036797.jpeg), some linen pants, polo tops, and chancletas (you gotta love it Cam) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y115/Rizmatic/Jay-Z.png), or rock gold chains and a hoody (http://hosted.ap.org/photos/F/f20d23a3-81ed-4cf3-a57d-35f91499ab38-big.jpg)

sorry, but you cannot be a mature adult with the bottom of your “shorts” hanging down over the tops of your shoes; with the tops of your pants down below the bottom of your ass crack; a t-shirt with sleeves that stop past your elbow; or driving around in a car blaring music so loudly people 3 blocks away can hear it.

    @anonymous:
Ooh! I can make up an arbitrary list of things that preclude one from being a mature adult, too! I nominate posting a polar opinion onto the internet without attaching a name – not necessarily your government, but something that separates you from all the other faceless cowards named “anonymous.”

olueysi– sorry not a blogger– you can contact me at natejohnson21@yahoo.com. I am a coward for stating an opinion, which i believe borders on factuality? Don’t get me wrong, adults don’t have to go around wearing suits and khakis and BS like that, but you are not a mature adult if you do not realize that having your pants falling down around your ass and wearing, as Dre says, shirts that look like night gowns makes you look like a damn fool.

and ps, putting a name to a comment still doesn’t make one non-’faceless’ on the internet, man. You are just as faceless as me, actually more so now that i put my e-mail up.

I think it’s less about suggesting that to be more mature you have to give shit up as opposed to saying, your fuckin’ white tees and air force ones make you hiphop. I don’t look like I’m into hiphop but that’s merely because I look terrible with a shirt down to my knees and a bandana, still doesnt mean I won’t listen to TI or Game or the Flaming Lips for that matter.

Dear God, another random person who murders my seven-letter first name!

anon, nothing personal: the consistent use of a handle in an environment allows other visitors to differentiate that participant from others, and perhaps build up a perspective over time. I’m not a blogger either; just click on “Other” and fill out the name and captcha fields. But that’s just a nit.

More seriously, I’ve been challenged a lot recently to see how Eurocentric many of my perspectives have been, and I question the association of certain looks with a lack of maturity. Admittedly, hip hop is a genre that is dominated by youth and tends to consign 30-year olds to the geriatric corner, but can a youth not be mature? His life may have been brief so far and his experiences limited, but if he meets his responsibilities and interacts appropriately with society, in what way is he not mature?

The truth is, dress is a social signifier, and it is the lack of conformity that we are equating with a immaturity – we are co-signing the notion that “maturity” is an acceptance of muted expressivity/individuality in favor of an automaton-like existence as a cog in the machine. I mention Eurocentrism because this is a peculiarly European ideal; African societies traditionally had greater displays of individual prowess and ability – in dance, in wrestling, in crafts, in dress, in adornments and so forth – that generally coincided with the increasing maturity of the individual.

Hip hop originated in the African American experience, and as with every expression of the Black Experience, Universal, it is being met with an oppositional insistence on falling in line. Now, there are many aspects of contemporary hip hop fashion that I do not find appealing – grills, too much sag in your pants, “shorts” that damn near touch the floor – but I can make the socio-political argument for their viability.

I just realized this whole thing makes me even more pissed off. Stop bullshitting about euro based clothing preferences. I understand years of racial segregation, jim crow laws, on and on, but are suits really meant to demean people with african ancestry. I mean everything has to be fought even if there’s not a clear reason for fighitng it. You know Edison invented the telephone, are people not be ing street and losing their black identity by using it?

Who said anything about not being street? or not being Black? the issue is that social and fiscal upliftment is tied to not only a particular (yes European) standard but also a rejection of something which is depper than simply clothing but Hip-Hop identity. (directed to post directly above)

Why is a suit bad. Is it bad because it’s european and white, is it bad because it’s not black? Is it bad because it’s beginnings arn’t tied to Harlem, Chicago, or New Orleans? Forever and on and on it seems like there has to be a division between people based on their culture. People seem to have these alliances not because they like the particular style/taste/artistry of something but rather swear allegiance because it was created by someone of a similiar identity.

I hate culture. I hate white culture, black culture, christian culture, muslim culture, jewish culture. Any particular culture I fucking hate you know why? Because it is representative of people doing something not because they like it but rather because they feel obligated to do it. I listen to blues music becaues I like it I listen to hiphop because I like it, I don’t tend to wear suits much because I just don’t like them, not because of who invented them. I’m not religous to a particular affiliation because there’s not a religion I personally believe corollates with anything that makes much sense to me. Despite the fact that I went to a particular denomination’s church for years or that my parents are also of different religions. I eat fish because I like it, I eat steak because I like it, and I eat vegetables and fruit because I like it. And I don’t alter my diet to particular days because some douschebag decreed me not too 1 week or 500 years ago.

    Culture Sucks.
