And The Winner Is… Menehan?!

By Danny | November 29, 2007

By now, most of you have heard the new single off Jay-Z’s much-hyped American Gangster album “Roc Boys (And The Winner Is…)”. What many don’t know, are the people responsible behind the blaring horns Jay raps over. The composition, entitled ‘Make the Road by Walking’, is a single released by the Menehan Street Band, a supergroup of sorts consisting of members of the El Michels Affair, The Dap-Kings, and Antibalas. Tommy Brenneck, guitarist for El Michels Affair and the Dap-Kings, formed the group with Homer Steinweiss and recorded the tracks in the basement of his Brooklyn apartment, on Menehan street. Leon Michels, founder of Truth & Soul records and El Michels Affair, composed the horn line with trumpeter Dave Guy of Dap-Kings fame.

Also, peep good friend of Palms Out, DJ Ese, wearing a Palms Out tee while he brews beer with Junk Science, who’re on his great label, Embedded Music.

And we’re not done yet… we recently received this fun album from The Milkman, full of hiphop instrumentals all based on Saturday morning cartoon themes. Here are a couple of selections from the album, plus a link to download the whole thing.

Dylan x Dap-Kings

By Danny | September 7, 2007

Dylan fans will be pleased to hear that the fine people at Columbia Records recently announced the release of a fifty-one track , three-CD Bob Dylan Greatest Hits compilation, expected to hit stores later on this year.
One of the more interesting tracks on the comp is a remake of “You’ll Go Your Way (And I’ll Go Mine)” off Blonde on Blonde. DJ Mark Ronson orchestrated the mix, and it features instrumentation by our good buddies the Dap-Kings from Daptone Records, who are always doing big things in the music world. “It’s the first time Bob Dylan’s given anyone the original multi-tracks of his songs to do remixes,” the producer explained. “I’m a huge Dylan fan, so it’s a great honor, and the fact that he heard it and approved it, as you imagine he’d be quite picky.” Follow the link to the video, and decide for yourself…

Tuna Salad and Puma Rackets

By Danny | February 22, 2007

After all the live concerts and various collaborations between Raekwon and our friends, El Michels Affair, the two went into the studio to blend the rawness and lyrical skill of Raekwon with the cinematic soul sound of El Michels Affair.

Featured on this 12” is a live studio performance of Pete Rock’s beat “The PJs” (flipped in a style that only El Michels Affair could provide), with all new lyrics by Raekwon, a clean version and an instrumental version, 2 bonus breaks and an original El Michels Affair instrumental composition. The single has been released in a limited edition run on Truth & Soul Records and you can purchase a copy online at Turntablelab if it hasn’t sold out already.

Bang Like Vehicular Homicide

By Danny | November 8, 2006

Volume 2 of this beautiful little side project by our friends, the El Michels Affair, entitled The Shaolin Series, inspired by their recent touring with the Wu-Tang Clan, in which they cover instrumentals of Wu-Tang classics in their signature Truth and Soul Records style. For the first installment, they chose to cover “C.R.E.A.M.” and “Glaciers of Ice”. This time ’round, they go with “Duel of the Iron Mics” on the A-Side, and “Bring Da Ruckus” on the flip, which is my personal favorite of the two. As a special bonus, I’ve also included a live Wu-Tang and El Michels performance of “Glaciers of Ice” from last March to show you the magic these two groups create together when onstage. Enjoy.

People Are You Ready?

By Danny | May 11, 2006

This Saturday the 13th, a rare and head-banging concert will take place at Brooklyn’s Southpaw venue. The legendary deep funk horn and sax duo The Pazant Brothers, who have played alongside the Skull Snaps (whose breaks have been sampled by every hip-hop artist and their mother), will take the stage. Backing the two will be Brooklyn’s own El Michels Affair, sometime backing band for Wu-tang Clan, sometime purveyors of masterfully playing soulful funk music as it was meant to be heard, and always friends of Palms Out Sounds. Additionally, Bronx River Parkway will be playing with latin legend Pucho from Pucho and his Latin Soul Brothers (funk nerds, go get your wet wipes). This beautiful extravaganza is being put on by our friends at the super-dope record label Truth and Soul Records and the super-dope magazine Wax Poetics, and is not to be missed. Don’t believe me? Listen to these tracks yo. Wa-wa-wee-wa!

Fly Vines” – Pazant Brothers
Ocho Rios” – El Michels Affair
Nora Se Va” – Bronx River Parkway
