Guest Contributer: James F!@$%^ Friedman

to expressing the inexpressible is music.”

Paired with The Rapture, James F!@$%^ Friedman is the New York-based, co-founder, co-owner, and current label manager of Throne of Blood records. Best Count Down

By guest | December 6, 2006

So this is my third post. After leaving Providence, taking a six month hiatius in America Ladino, I’m settled in Philly.

I was at my friend’s house ‘Big Pink’ in south phil (a retired venue that for years hosted loads of basement bands, including my own favs the Extreme Animals), and after some noise noshing in the basement we headed out to see a guy from Baltimore perform. Soon enough we were back in a basement, west phil, everyone’s cuttin’ up the dancefloor, with this guy Dan Deacon at the reins, burning our ears and floating our hearts with his blazing fantasy stories, endorphonic stage presence, and VERY epic countdowns. I give it up for some of the most exciting, fresh dancathon material I’ve heard in a bit.

Dan Deacon – “The Crystal Cat*
Dan Deacon – “Big Big Big Big Big
Dan Deacon – “Big Milk*

p.s. Dan’s playing at Asterisk in NYC this Friday. Check out his MySpace page here for tour dates and funny pictures of him.

Flying Whale Tour

Phantom Buffalo“Anywhere With Oxygen”
Phantom Buffalo“Bathing Suit for a Rich Girl” (Live)
Previously known to almost nobody as the Ponies, Phantom Buffalo from Portland, Maine, do some sahweeet sike-a-delick pop! Tiny worlds and insect girls. NO ONE can escape it, and who would want to?
[buy ShiShiMuMu]

The Blow“Come On Petunia”
This chick turns me on. Men and lesbians agree that the Blow possesses some tantalizing flavors, delivered with sultry service. I saw her live in Providence last year and she made me dance like the floor was hot coals! I haven’t found too much of her dancey stuff online, but she’s got it. If The Blow comes to your town, don’t miss it. P.S. she’s at least bisexual because she used to date The Microphones guy, she sang on that Microphones song “Oh Anna.”

Exremely Low Battey

Extreme Animals – “Knock on Troll’s Door”
Affiliated with Paper Rad collective, Extreme Animals have been churning out some wild super hyped party-thrashing ultra ultra. This short anthem is the very appropriate introduction to the album Dare I Say Troll?????. On a personal note, I came home from a few parties the other weekend to find my roomies indulging in total carnage, fueled by the EA. I was actually quite pleased to join in the destruction, but it cost us most of our furniture and china. I would advise all to use this music at high volumes, but with caution, it can bring some unexpected results. And if they come to your stomping ground, don’t forget to bring your troll collection for free admittance.

Lo-Bat – “White Russian”
Native to Belgium, Lo-Bat has made this stuff with two GameBoys, Amiga, and LSDJ (“the Game Boy tool of choice for amateur & professional musicians and composers”). It sounds so good, why haven’t I been using these tools? Give this guy the props he deserves, play this song at someone else’s party.

Pink House Recordings / XPPL

By guest | February 8, 2006

Some of you may have heard of a town called Providence, RI, most famous for its warehouse parties (Fort Thunder), postmodern art (Forcefield), and noise scene (Lightning Bolt).
After graduating from RISD and surviving New Orleans, the Experimental People, or XPPL are working hard and enjoying much success as artists in L.A. Ryan Trecartin’s work has been featured in the New York Underground Film Festival and Art Forum, and will be exhibited in the Whitney Biennial this March in New York. You can see and hear more of Rhett’s work here.
