Hailing from Helsinki, Renaissance Man are among a handful of pioneers of a growing percussive tech house movement that has been keeping many a Brooklyn waistline busy this year. As proud members of their budding fan base, we asked the boys (Ville and Martti) if they would be up for a short interview. With music this good and a name so reassuring, we were eager to hear more about the duo.

Interview and mixtape after the jump

How did you start DJng?
Ville: I’ve been making music in some way for pretty much my whole life, started to DJ at some friend’s parties maybe seven years ago.
Martti: Yeah I think it was just a natural extension/excuse for being heavily into electronic dance music.

Did you meet through music or something else?
V: We actually met while working in a same architect’s office in Helsinki. We eventually ended up designing a new club where we started our own monthly night together which lead to where we are now.

So are you really polymaths? What are your other passions?
V: I think were both very actively interested and involved in a lot of stuff like arts, architecture, science etc. Martti is an architect and I’ve studied design.
M: ‘Contemporary culture’ at large.

Both born and raised in Finland? Are you still there now?
V: Yes, born and raised in Finland, now living in Helsinki and Berlin.
M: I was born in Finland but spent most of my childhood in Holland. Lately I’ve been around a lot: New York, Berlin, back to Helsinki and next up to Paris. It’s getting a bit exhausting to be honest.

Your sound takes us all around the globe and then straight back to Finland. What’s your dream destination?
V: Guess I can’t name one dream destination. Club-wise I think something like Panorama Bar, but otherwise I think I’d rather go to Bali or Galapagos… at least while it’s winter in Europe.
M: Any place I haven’t been to. Lately I’ve been obsessed about Ïle Amsterdam. I guess dj’ing won’t take me there, unfortunately.

The Hare Krishna mantra is sampled for your track, “What is Guru”. Are you influenced by Hinduism and its philosophies?
M: Hah, no. It was mainly a reference to the abundance of the mantra in the history of popular music.

Do you plan on sampling any other ‘world’ music sounds?
V: We sample a lot of sounds but it’s never been only about ‘world’ music.
M: More or less every track we make includes sounds from quite surprising sources. A big thank you to the excellent Finnish music library system and amateur web content.

Do specific sounds ever inspire a song for you? Sometimes we imagine the Aloha Dub to be inspired by a raving giant blue whale, um haha.. as an example?
V: Some tracks can be built around a certain sound, but not all of them. We like strong themes as long as they serve the tracks, not the other way around.

What are you looking forward to most this year?
M: New places, new faces, excellent parties and the usual. We have a tour coming up that has a special place in our hearts. Can’t tell more about that yet unfortunately.

In the midst of Bangkok’s political instability, Yama Indra (aka

G.L.O.V.E.S.) and his charmingly great girlfriend chatted with me on my
roof while we endured some serious Thai sun. What a treat it was to
talk about all things electro with one of Australia’s musical gems
while our legs dangled in the refreshingly cool pool water. And guess
what!? Now Pants has flown around the world to join me and experience
the madness that is this city. Being in the same time zone again
couldn’t feel better. I mean seriously, we already fed an elephant
twice! Pure happiness all around, kind of like Damn Arms’ new single
Destination Parts I & II.

“Destination marks the band’s shedding of their former twisted-new-rave-crunch exterior for a more refined, filtered ozzie-yacht-house sound. A two-part summer odyssey, Destination Pt1 is a blissed out digital-love serenade, a nautical dance ballad, the ultimate wacked out cruise ship club music…”

Damn Arms – “Destination Part 1“

Get the full double A side single on Bang Gang 12 inches! Interview
after the jump.

Your name, how did it come to be yours? What is its meaning?

My name came to my dad in a dream. He is generally a spiritual person,
a man of the cosmos. Yama is a god of death.

What instruments do you play? Which one are you best at?

Well I like to play around with the guitar, bass guitar, piano and
trumpet. But I am classically trained in piano. I would say that I am
pretty experienced in synths and drum machines. Really, I just like
to work out every function possible, even if it’s a remote or my
digital watch.

Are you parents musicians too?

My dad plays the didgeridoo really well, he used to teach it.

What inspired the name for Damn Arms? Is it because you ran out of
arms to play all those instruments? Are they G.L.O.V.E.S. for your
Damn Arms?

I had a few names going and GLOVES was the winner. I like the
imagery, it conjures up a belief that music and art are related and
should be presented as such. The image of gloves is inspired from 70s
Italian film, where you would often see strangulation by a lone pair
of gloves. Damn Arms just came about. The two names aren’t
purposefully related.

In what direction do you see electronic music moving in the years to come?

Well I can’t see electro and pop going together for much longer, maybe
that’s because of my own taste though that I say that. Vintage lo fi
will stick around. French touch will continue to be a presence
because of its history. The same goes for disco house. I hope to be
getting into some sort of oriental electronic sounding stuff soon. Oh
yeah, don’t forget to send me some of those Punjabi tracks.

Jam or Jelly?

Jelly

Koalas or Kangaroos?

Kangaroos

I got to tour Australia this year which was pretty sick. I’d never
been there before so in between shows I’d go to beaches and zoos and
all that. A few years back through a freak airline price misprint my
friends and I managed to score plane tickets from Toronto to Cyprus for
$30 plus tax. The island was amazing, and clubs in Ayia Napa are like
next-level corny. It’s all theme bars like the “Flintstones bar” and
the “Castle club”. Hilarious.

What’s an ideal evening for you on days that you’re not djing?

House party! One thing I miss about college was having parties in run
down houses where noone cared if you fucked them up. The closest thing
in the city is loft parties I guess, but it’s just not the same.
Usually I just go to a club night a friend is promoting. Last call in
Toronto is 2am, so on a good night there’s a lot of after hours stuff
going on to keep the party rolling. The best nights are always just
when you’re with a good crew, music’s playing and everyone’s having a
good time.

Favorite pastimes to do in Toronto? What’s Canada got that the States are missing?

I’ve been in Toronto for about a year an a half. Toronto’s pretty good
in the summer because there’s lots of parks and patios to hang out in,
but in the winter you’ve pretty much just got to hole up inside and
find indoors things to do. As for what the USA is missing: Don’t take
this the wrong way, but your beer is weak. It tastes watered down. And
poutine.

Your mix – Any particular moments or song choices you would like
to mention? New finds? What’s killin it for you right now?

It’s a bit short, isn’t it? Kind of a mini mix I guess. Lately I’ve
just been feeling anything with a good groove and maybe something a
bit trippy thrown in. Some of the disco inspired stuff out right now
is really good. I still really love the energy in electro but I’m way
tired of that buzzsaw big room sound. This mix is a bit lower key from
some of my others; not too many electrobangers. It has a couple
yet-untitled new songs I’m working on (the third one and the second
last one).

Montreal or Vancouver?
Montreal. Vancouver’s prettier but Montreal is crazy fun

JLO Fly Girl or JLo Baby Mama? in in in living color….
What’s JLo Baby Mama? I’m going to say Fly Girl Jlo, the diva thing is
a turn off

Ice Cream or Ice Cold?
Ice Cream

Listening to Winter in Shanghai, this former solo drummer turned punk-rock singer brings you from your desktop to the snow covered streets of his city almost instantaneously. He brings us just the kind of unadulterated personal style we could only hope for from a three time world dj champion named Kid Fresh. So for all of you bundled up tight and trying to fight the end of winter blues, we suggest you take a break from reworking your Mii characters and let Andy bring you on an Asian adventure of a different kind.

Why Shanghai?

Shanghai is an insane place. It’s the opposite of Germany, where everything is over-regulated, which I really became bored of. It’s pretty much the center of Asia too, which makes it easy to travel to all of those other interesting places.

What’s the scene like there?

The Shanghai scene is definitely interesting. Millions of expats from all over the world mixed in with gazillions of locals. Cllubwise, you got lots of tasteless, decadent mainstream palaces with crazy budgets on the one side, and tiny, grimy underground spots on the other. Not too much in between yet but subcultures are steadily growing. The indie clubbing scene as I see it is still pretty much in children’s shoes, but it seems to be developing quite quickly.

How’s Shanghai fashion? What’s your favorite article of clothing?

Nothing spectacular about Shanghai fashion…hilarious fake markets. My favorite article of clothing might be my new hounds tooth scarf I bought on the street in a grimy alley for 20 Yuan. Smelled funny at first, but after washing it, it’s really cozy!

So the mix…

Recorded on 2 turntables, 1 mixer, 1 sloppy g4 ibook, garageband & serato. I’ve mostly went for some of my favorite tunes in 07, some classics & new stuff on there as well though.

What flavor is Mika’s Lollipop?

Last Friday night DJs Klever and Tittsworth dropped in at Studio B’s weekly FUN party for the final stop of their winter tour, and they brought all kinds of party with them. One need only listen to these two legends for a couple sets to understand why they’ve been booked around the world and back. Seemless mixing, great taste, tons of energy. Our only remorse Saturday morning was that Friday was over, and that according to our headaches, we had had quite the time.

Last Saturday we met up with Dave Nada in Brooklyn shortly before his set at Southpaw to ask him some questions. A few hours and several vodka tonics later we found ourselves thrusting in a mess of Park Slope partygoers. While his first round at the tables got the crowd going, the second nearly set the place on fire. Despite the smell of sweaty yuppies, the mix of old-school hip-hop, electro beats, and his ODB t-shirt brought this pair of electripsters back to the dance floor, seemingly like moths to a flame. After retrieving our shit from the coat check, we carelessly threw our jackets on the ground and formed a booty-shaking circle while Dave did his thing. As we clean the muddy footprints off of our winter garments, we can’t help but take satisfaction in knowing that we knew where Brooklyn was at last weekend.

Interview w/ Dave Nada
