So Serious I’m Laughin
By scheme | March 16, 2007
Bill Maher made a new “New Rule” that I found interesting: “New Yorkers are no longer allowed to complain about how bad the pizza is when in cities other than New York.” Homie has a point, no doubt. I’ve definitely caught myself laughing at “New York Style Pizza” signs in other places (whatcha want me to do? I’m sorry!). But does his statement make the actual statement any less valid? You bet your pretty little minority presidential candidate it doesn’t. With that said, no offense to our good friends out there who happen to be PC users, but I’ve come up on a DELL laptop to temporarily replace my fallen mac, and I’ve gotta say, it’s just not the same. Turning a snotty and snobby nose up at the PC is hardly original, and is pretty much just an out and out annoyance at this point, but it is what it is. It’s either going to cost me absolutely nothing to get my laptop fixed, or my pride, as I can only imagine strolling around at Hunts Point in purple pleather ass-less chaps being my best fundraising option. What can I say, I didn’t make much of a petty green merchant in my teenage years. But, maybe one of you kind folks’ll will follow the puma brick road…
Alrighty- shameless plus and mac bitching aside, a real cool associate of mine Knox dropped through my office today. After schooling a couple of eager young writers about responsible journalism vs. what’s in your avg local paper, he put me up on this band that he’s been working with called the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. Turns out Haldan’s dad copped their CD recently during one of their trademark random subway gigs, and they’ve also (coincidentally) done some work with our friends over at Truth & Soul. Peep out some of their video below. I’m surprised I didn’t get up on this sooner- these cats are dope.

Yeah…among other things, these commercials say that Macs don’t get viruses and PC’s do- but laptops in general will only put up with your shit for so long (i.e. kind of dropping it, more than once, kind of) before refusing to turn on. Hence, no sample wednesday or updates in the past couple of days. No worries, we’re on the j.o., just thought you guys should know whatsup. Hopefully the so-called geniuses at the apple store can help me.

Palms Out: Tell people who are not familiar a little bit about yourself and Roll Deep
Target: Basically we’ve all grown up together, we’re all from the same area in East London, Bow. We used to be involved in UK Garage. They had like the So Solid Crew and people who were big in that scene. We’ve basically just got together since those days; playing in the clubs, doing the underground scene, and eventually we got into the studio and started making music.
Palms Out: And now the big boys wanna be down
Target: Oh definitely. For the past four or five years we’ve been doing this. It’s only been the underground showing us love. Commercial radio just wouldn’t play our music. Slowly but surely, because the buzz has just been breaking from the underground, the commercial stations are starting to play the music and the majors wanting to sign certain acts. We got signed, Dizzee Rascal, Kano, Sovereign, people like that, are getting the attention of the money makers. They want in.
Palms Out: Are you worried about where it might go?
Target: I’m happy to see it go worldwide. The more people who get to know about it, the better. As long as we keep the underground element involved, I don’t see anything wrong with it getting bigger and better,
Palms Out: Do you listen to a lot of U.S. stuff?
Target: Most of the cats from the grime scene or this UK music scene all listen to the US stuff, and you’d be surprised how up to date the London people are. People like Papoose and people like that have been big over here for ages…People like Westwood are so up to date. He plays the latest guys, so we’re up to date.
Palms Out: You know Chantel Fiddy?
Target: Yeah she’s a good friend of mine
Palms Out: Oh yeah? Well as I was doing the whole google thing, I ran into her blog and I was reading one of her posts and she was talking about how much sexism she’s encountered in the grime scene
Target: It’s definitely a male dominated scene. There are very few female artists and half of them are wack, if I’m (being) honest. But I can see what she’s saying. There are a few females singers that are doing well at the moment in the scene. There are a handful of female emcees doing well. It’s kind of like hip-hop. The doors are open to the females, but you can’t be wack, you gotta be able to stand up against the guys in this day and age. And there’s only a few that are actually doing that at the moment.
Palms Out: In hip-hop it seems like females have to sexualize their image to become successful. Is it the same situation over there or a completely different thing?
Target: I’m thinking with the grime scene it’s kind of different, I think you get respect just for being talented. You don’t really have to come with the whole sexy r&b Beyonce image. There’s a lot of UK r&b singers and you find that their image is always that sexy image you’d expect. But with the grime emcees, with the females, I think they’re just trying to get noticed for their talent, and I think that’s kind of a good thing for them.
Palms Out: How many officially are down right now?
Target: Right now, officially, I think there’s 14 or 15. That’s from djs to emcees to producers. You might just catch three of us at a club, depending on what we’re doing.
Palms Out: What about Dizzee Rascal? It sounds like you guys were the springboard for his success
Target: The whole Dizzee thing…Roll Deep was something he got into. He used to live across the street from me and ended up meeting me and meeting Wiley. Obviously we were older than him at the time, he was like 14 or 15 at the time when he first started. Eventually, he was rolling with Wiley more. Wiley brought him into the fold, and he started doing the club circuit with us. He started to stand out (because) people were asking “who’s this Dizzee Rascal kid?” And it just got bigger and bigger from there. Him and Wiley both signed to XL Recordings to do solo deals. Him and Wiley had a fallout and Dizzee just decided to go on his own. But we’re happy for his success because if anything it’s breaking down doors we would have had to travel through anyway. Most of the crew still speaks to him, it’s only him and Wiley that don’t really speak. It’s over silly politics but, most of us still speak to him.
Palms Out: What’s the your perspective on the whole conflict with the west and the middle east?
Target: Most people knew that Blair is just a pawn. He just [followed] Bush around and whether that gets us into trouble or not he [didn’t] even care. [Recently] we was on the high terror alert and loads of people were trying to fly out/fly in and they couldn’t because of these plots to blow up airplanes in the UK. It’s all because of Blair leading us into blind wars with Bush. Blair definitely doesn’t get no ratings from the urban district anyway.
Palms Out: Interesting. What’s the weirdest or wildest thing that’s happened at one of your shows?
Target: The weirdest or wildest? Whoa…there’s been a lot of wild groupie action [laughs]. Just the other day, this is a recent one…I wasn’t there but a couple of the guys were out there [one of the greek islands] and they were like “we got Roll Deep’s CD and we want to see who is going to do the most to get this CD.” And before they could say anything else, some girl just stripped completely naked and just started whining up, didn’t have no shame. (Needless to say) she won herself the CD. I think she ended up in the hotel as well…And that’s just one of the stories.

Sample Wednesday 26: LL & Fox Boogie
By scheme | February 8, 2007
That aside, I have a particular affinity for the David Porter record below, because I remember DJ Scratch (producer of “Ill Bomb”, which utilized the Porter record) talking about finding dope samples in an interview about 2 years ago. He said that many producers miss out on gems simply because they don’t listen to the whole record. They’ll listen to maybe the first 45 seconds, and if they don’t hear something “sample worthy”, keep it moving. The sample for “Ill Bomb” is about 3 seconds long, and comes with maybe 30 seconds left on the song, after the section that was used for Biggie’s “Who Shot Ya?” That’s a find. Enjoy the tracks folks.
