Maybe it’s been a foolish endeavor, and maybe I’m the only one who misses the blog ol’ days, but I’ve been giving it a shot. I’ve been working on restoring some of the old content, though much of it was lost. I’ve slowly been rebuilding the old remix sunday archives, and even posting the occasional new edition. And I’ve been writing again.
You can find all the label’s releases here, on bandcamp, or most anywhere you listen to music these days. I’ve still got copies of some of the old vinyl releases, and I recently released the first in a set of charitable cassette compilations to raise awareness about the continued [mis]use of broken windows policing methods.
Plus, I put together a playlists section with a handful of spotify lists that hopefully start to capture a [slightly] updated version of the moods we used to peddle. Give those a listen and a ❤ if you would be so kind. If you want to get in touch, just give me a holler.
Saadi is current with a new single. Clocking in at just under 2 minutes, “Clotheslines” is short and sweet. A sort of melancholy and final farewell to summer. The single comes with remixes, including a superb dub by our friend Douster.
Those of you in New York should check out the release party at Ella this Wednesday, with sets from hometown heroes Cheif Boima and Uproot Andy.
Michael Magnan & Nita, aka BOOKWRMZ, who throw The Beat monthly with Chaz & Jason of Palms Out, have just released a mix for the new K48. Check out the K48 books, and preorder the upcoming issue, which explores the theme of magic in 196 spellbinding pages.
BOOKWRMZ – ABRAK48DABRA MIX (70min sc)
Also, in case you missed it, soak in the feeling of Nita’s remix of Monica’s “First Night”.
Everyone has their own take on how the independent music industry (if that’s even an appropriate term anymore) is going to sustain itself in this new decade. Some people say artists will make most of their money touring. Some people claim they can continue to support themselves with record sales (most of those people aren’t artists). Up-and-comings leak their records first, let the internet media dust settle, and then take them to the distributors. And then there are those reckless few who just release everything for free and feed their empty bellies with blog love and compliments. They may be lying on cots in their mothers’ basements like 19th century Russian consumptives, smoking Top tobacco and smiling into the pallid glow of their Macbooks. Jim Sellars, the young Australian behind Electric Sea Spider, is one of those people (except for that last part, I’m just speculating). has taken the producer away from the reverbed emotional lethargy of The Thief (2009) and the trippy ambiance of Fear God Fear Satan (2008) and In Lucid Dreams (2009), toward a more shuffled post-Dilla stumble that could be compared to the likes of Baths and Slumgullion.
From the future: as far as I can tell, Sellars continues to make music as Electric Sea Spider, but he’s also been making some extremely captivating music as Yunzero.
Our own LOL Boys bring the original mugger into dungeonous territory. Catch the boys at our showcase next Friday, Oct. 22 @ Pachita in New York alongside so many other Palms Out family members. And look out for their new EP, LDR, out on Palms Out in December.
From the future: Blaqstarr – “Pressure” has been lost to the sands of time, including, inexplicably, the youtube video. If I find the mp3 I’ll put it up here for posterity.
Exploited Records will be celebrating its 3rd anniversary with a massive party at the Villa in Berlin on Saturday, October 16th Exploited has also released a free compilation of 8 brilliant tracks to go with the anniversary, including this Modeselektor edit of Siriusmo’s “Wow” – Enjoy.
After years of underage drinking, today I finally turn 21. I’ve been waiting my whole life for this day and now that its finally here, I’ve been dancing since 12am this morning. Soon I will be Atlantic City clubbing and blowing the little money I have. Since it’s about a two hour bus ride, I have my playlist ready which will keep me in high spirits.
I don’t know where Busy Signal is getting all these instrumentals. One could imagine him running through the halls of Warner Brothers with a burlap sack full of studio tapes slung over his shoulder. I can’t think of a single other artist in hip hop, dancehall or reggaeton who so avidly jumps to voice over the dubs from just about anything that blows up on the radio. Let’s just say, “Big up Owl City” is not a phrase you hear every day.
Mischief springs from the power which the moneyed interest derives from a paper currency which they are able to control, from the multitude of corporations with exclusive privileges… which are employed altogether for their benefit. – Andrew Jackson
It’s amazing what a little bass drum can do sometimes. Headshotboyz take the elements of Mount Kimbie’s wallowing sentimental soundscape, line ‘em up to a no-swing pulse, nail them together with some friendly quarter note kicks, sprinkle in a little egg-shaky-shaky and SHAZAM… you can dance to it!
These days, it sounds as if the women who used to sing from the front line in popular bassline and garage tracks are now just standing in some far corner of the room, trying to get a word in. I dig it.
Chimney Records just dropped the Sex Appeal Riddim and it’s got some big names on it. Movado’s verse isn’t on the riddim video for some inexplicable reason, so here’s his track.
Old friends of Palms Out, Savage Skulls, have been working hard on a barrel full of remixes – my favorite of which is for the sweet Danish songstress, Oh Land. Another old friend of Palms Out – Kasper Bjørke – discovered Oh Land and signed her to the danish imprint Fake Diamond last year. Now, she is the next big thing on Sony Epic in the States, immediately signed after a stellar SXSW performance. The remix package for “Sun of a Gun” is golden, also including a gorgeous remix from Yuksek, and solid mixes from Ian Pooley and Kris Menace.

Sean Roman made a real impression on us this past February with his soul splashed house hit “Lick.” Now the Ontario based artist is back with “What To Do” — a steady summer jam filled with encouraging vocal loops that tickle just below the tan line.
Our very own B.Rich has been causing quite a stir with his alter-ego: Kastle.
He just sent over a much demanded track “Camera Phone”–a hoover laced, vocoder dripping steamer. Not one to be at all stingy, he also sent over a solid remix of Martin Buttrich. Look out for his debut EP – out soon on Starkey & Dev79′s Seclusiasis imprint.
Dreams- Either we have no dreams or our dreams are interesting. We should learn to arrange our waking life the same way: nothing or interesting.

NGUZUNGUZU deliver a stunning 25 minute mix for Truants. Perfect for a humid day in New York.
Truancy Volume 11: NGUZUNGUZU (25minutes sc)
“The Massacooramaan, also known as Sea Master, is a huge, hairy, man-like creature that lives in rivers in the interior. The name is derived from the chapters of redemption. This beast is almost untamed-looking, with the appearance of a wild Berhane, but don’t be fooled: It is a fearsome thing that capsizes small boats and eats the occupants.”
For there is no necessary antithesis between chastity and sensuality; every good marriage, every genuine love affair, transcends this antithesis.
– Friedrich Nietzsche
Proverbs often contradict one another, as any reader soon discovers. The sagacity that advises us to look before we leap promptly warns us that if we hesitate we are lost; that absence makes the heart grow fonder, but out of sight, out of mind.
